The Sportfishing Conservancy and NOAAʼs Office of National Marine Sanctuaries have announced that the third annual Sanctuary Classic — a free fishing photo contest that celebrates recreational fishing in Americaʼs national marine sanctuaries and promotes conservation-focused fishing practices is ready to kick off for Summer 2014. This Summer-long photo competition opens up June 7 — World Oceans Day— and runs throughout summer, ending on September 1 (Labor Day). Key West local and business owner Ed Johnston won the second annual Florida Keys Dolphin Championship by weighing in a 46.8 lb. bull dolphin on the first day of the two-day tournament. This was Ed’s first tournament and after landing the “Slammer” fish it was decided to turn the “Signs Unlimited” boat towards Key West to make sure they got this prize fish to the weigh station in time. (AFTCO) and the latest in the family line to support conservation projects, was voted Californian of the Year by the state’s Outdoor Writers Association, one of the highest awards given by the group of over 200 of the top active members of California’s media. I’m going to assume that commercial fishermen caught this extremely rare deep-water mega-mouth shark off Japan. It was hauled up from 2600 feet of water. This shark is one of only 58 known sightings of this species. The megamouth was discovered for the first time in 1976. A public necropsy was performed at the Marine Science Museum in Shizuoka City, Japan. It was a 13-foot long female and it drew a crowd of 1500 people. Excitement took over and no one could sleep the night before April 24th, 2014. The morning was still young when a total of 60 people, with 33 being anglers, took the three hour trek from Port Everglades to Freeport, Grand Bahamas.
