I still can’t believe how big this cobia was. Can you imagine how big it looked underwater, where all objects appear 25% larger than life. Like seeing it in the sideview mirror. I hate to report that there has been a bad explosion and subsequent fire at the Panama Sportfishing Lodge in Boca Chica. Unofficial reports of one tourist killed and others injured are coming out of the area. One possible explanation offered is that the power had been off in the area, and when it kicked back on, it may have caused something to spark in the area of some fuel storage. This is some cool footage of South Pacific commercial tuna fishing with pole and line only. No reels, like the old days. I think this is better than purse seines and it spreads the bounty of the sea to more local workers, instead of giant corporations, although I doubt the co-op bought that ship. Researchers in Scammon’s Lagoon in Mexico, recently found twin gray whale calves that were joined together in the chest/belly area of the abdomen. Unfortunately the whales did not survive and may have been stillborn due to their condition. The whales were collected for study and a search is on for the mother to determine if she survived the birth. The whales were less than half of the length of normal whale calves, which can be up to 16 feet long at birth. Unfortunately the California Department of Fish and Wildlife have discovered that feral dreissenid mussels have found their way into Lake Piru. Lake Piru has been sheltered from the invasion of quagga or zebra mussels since it does not share water with the infected Colorado River. These small, encrusting, freshwater mussels are native to Eurasia and once introduced, multiply quickly competing for food resources with native species. They also encrust boats, docks and any submerged equipment or structures.
