Roosterfish Las Arenas Angler Ron Burgess of Temecula, CA caught a massive roosterfish on June 16th that was estimated by local captains to weigh 135 pounds or more. It is an estimate, because Ron released his fish after a quick picture. It took three men to lift the fish in and out of the boat, and they report it swam off vigorously and “still pissed off”. Ron was fishing in Las Arenas, Mexico with Capt. Loreto Green of Tailhunter International Sportfishing in La Paz. Owner Jonathan Roldan said, “Las Arenas has surely lived up to it’s reputation as the “Roosterfish…

When asked about the program one soldier remarked “…It has shown me that I can adapt and find new directions. My world did not end with my injury.…
Sea Lion Controversy Kill Salmon As in every debate, there are moderate viewpoints towards the middle of the road and then there are the “zealots” on either side of the issue who will not listen or be swayed. This holds true for just about every tough subject that we face as a society. The subject of sea lions vs. salmon is not above this universal dynamic. A very emotionally charged battle is brewing as lawmakers struggle to make proposals that could save the endangered native salmon and possibly kill some problematic sea lions. It is documented that certain groups of…
The latest tool in the battle against Florida’s alarming lionfish invasion will be deployed this month at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center in Port Everglades, Florida. From June 27 to 29, the five-person manned submersible Antipodes will take scientists on a series of dives to study the growing lionfish population. The goal of the two days of diving and panel discussions is to foster long-term collaboration among scientists to halt the unprecedented expansion of this invasive species. Antipodes, operated by OceanGate Inc., will utilize a high-powered prototype collection system to catch the fish for later study. The use of OceanGate’s…

Senators Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) have filed legislation that seeks to transfer responsibility for the management of Gulf red snapper to the Gulf States. The legislation (S.1161) comes two months after the governors of four Gulf states released a joint letter to the leadership of the U.S. House and Senate stating that federal management of Gulf red snapper is “irretrievably broken,” and calling for a coordinated Gulf states partnership for red snapper management. “The red snapper fishery is tremendously complicated and has lurched from crisis to crisis under federal management with no end in sight,” said Chester…
Mid Atlantic 500000 Marlin Tournament It’s been nearly nine months since Superstorm Sandy made landfall on New Jersey and while the entire coastline was impacted by the storm, much of south Jersey, including Cape May, received only minor damage compared to coastal communities to the north. The crews at South Jersey Marina and Canyon Club Resort Marina in Cape May have been hard at work during the off season between repairs, upgrades and projects at both facilities in preparation for the upcoming season. Among them was the completion of dredging of Canyon Club Resort Marina to an eight-foot-plus depth at…
Under pleasant blue skies the weight scale boldly said 33.5 lbs for angler Tim Sheridan of Venice CA. He is a happy man as you can see from his smile. He won the 38th Annual Marina Del Rey Halibut Derby held June 8 and 9, 2013 and will be going to Sitka Point Lodge in Alaska as his first place prize! The waves were high for surfing but wide and easy on the fishermen. This derby had a good contingent of dedicated anglers who fished all over Santa Monica Bay for our beloved local California Halibut. Even though it is…
During a photo/video shoot of a marlin release in Australia, Alistair McGlashan was in the water filming the marlin being revived beside the boat. Suddenly he felt a “pressure wave” beside him. He turned to look, but saw nothing until he turned back to the marlin which now had a 600 plus pound mako shark eating him. This is all captured on video until he gets his chance to get back in the boat. Photo from his Facebook
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), at its June 12 meeting in Lakeland, approved a proposal to make tarpon and bonefish catch-and-release-only fisheries and moved forward with a proposal to modify the types of gear used to target tarpon in Boca Grande Pass. This catch-and-release proposal was adopted in recognition of the fact that the economic and fishing value of bonefish and tarpon greatly exceed their value as food fishes. The following changes will go into effect Sept. 1 in state and federal waters off Florida: All harvest of tarpon will be eliminated, with the exception of the…
Not a common occurence, these Alaskan fishermen get a big surprise when an orca swims up and steals their halibut boat side. (Editor’s note, a breif profanity at beginning so watch the kids)
With the recent reports down below from the Long Range boats this early June exploratory trip was going to make an effort to get on some tuna. Bluefin, Albacore, Yellowfin, Skipjack it didn’t matter as skipper Mark Ornoz had his sights set on just getting to the area and start looking. The Pacific Voyager was fueled and baited up before we left the dock around 7:00pm on Friday June 7th. Today’s marine electronics are built for interfacing and/or networking. This is a good thing —the ability for products to “talk” with each other and share information makes for a better navigation experience. Radar targets or AIS data overlaid onto chartplotter displays, and GPS data helping to keep a boat’s autopilot steer to a waypoint are just a couple examples. These same capabilities also provide boaters — especially those who aren’t particularly “techie” — with a confusing array of technologies, standards and terms to decipher, such as NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000, Ethernet, CANBus, SeaTalk, SimNet and more. A boater looking to…

The trips consist of multiple days and 90 percent of the fish are released. “ We try to only take the swords that are in rough shape and probably won’t make it,”…
It is crazy to think that we have explored outer space many millions of miles away more than the oceans of our own planet. Now the technology for deep-water exploration has expanded and we are logging more hours in the deep where no human eyes have ever peered. Discovering new species is common and observing living creatures that had previously only been found dead or dying is amazing. One of these incredible creatures is the Oarfish. There is stiff competition to be the most unique creature in the sea, but the oarfish may be a contender. It does lay claim…

Lawsuit Red Snapper Louisiana Nmfs This past April, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, together with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, filed a joint lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Texas, challenging the emergency rule enacted by the National Marine Fisheries Service that would allow the NMFS regional administrator to significantly reduce the recreational red snapper season in federal waters off the coasts of Louisiana and Texas. Last week, a judgment was rendered in favor of Louisiana and Texas that declares the emergency rule null and void. The ruling means that NMFS must recalculate the 2013 red snapper fishing…
NOAA Fisheries announces a final rule establishing the 2013 gag recreational fishing season that opens on July 1 and closes on December 3, 2013. The final rule will be effective July 5, 2013. The recreational gag season opens on July 1, 2013, and the rule closes the season on December 3, 2013. December 3, 2013, is when the annual catch target of 1.287 million pounds is projected to be caught. However, if at any…
