Every now and then you come across a product that is so smart, yet so simple that you can’t help but say to yourself, “Why didn’t I think of that?” When walking the isles of a recent boat show in Florida, we came across one such product. Called the Mate Series, this combination rod and cup holder makes the most of the space on your boat. Boats tend to either have a lack of cup holders or a lack of rod holders. It’s tough to find the perfect balance, but not with this smart product that converts each rod holder…

Two years before the inaugural Day At The Docks 2011 took place, Curt Wiesenhutter caught a 388-pound yellowfin fishing with legendary captain Bill Poole. The yellowfin set the IGFA all-tackle world record. The year was 1977. That record stood as the benchmark for more than 30 years, until Mike Livingston of Sunland, California, boated his 405.2-pounder on the Vagabondwith Capt. Mike Lackey this past November. Day at the Docks has always celebrated the San Diego fleet, and the catches they put up. To keep up that tradition, event director Catherine Miller announced that they will be honoring the new yellowfin…
When luremaker Cameron Yee came by the Bloodydecks booth at the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach to show off his latest wares, we were all a bit skeptical. They looked cool, but glass lures? Won’t they break the moment they roll onto the deck? Each handmade lure head sports a little difference in shape and size. No two are exactly alike. But still, glass? “This lure raised a winning fish at the Bisbees,” Cameron told us and then proceeded to bash the hell out of the lure against the counter. We all recoiled, expecting shards of glass to fly…
Mustad Demon Perfect Offset Circle Hooks No other tool has saved more billfish since the advent of catch-and-release fishing than the circle hook. With its unique shape, circle hooks actually improve your hookup percentage (once you get used to fishing with them) and almost always catch a fish in the mouth rather than gut-hooking the animal. But until recently, the sizing of circle hooks was all over the place. A 10/0 circle hook might be the same size as an 8/0 circle hook in another style. Mustad’s new Demon Perfect Circle Hook changes all of that. The company’s hook designers…
Throughout the natural world, spring marks the start of new beginnings. The days get longer, the weather improves, and plant life blooms after a long winter of senescence. For most living things, this means it’s time to make some babies! West Coast Fish Spawning is no different. The fish sense the change in the sun angles and instinct kicks in. There are a few exceptions, but most of the local reef fish that California anglers catch spawn at some point between March and July. Rockfishes, lingcod, and cabezon get an early jump and start spawning in the winter but continue the…
The 405.2-pound Yellowfin Caught on November 30, 2010, is now the All-Tackle World Record Landing a 400-pound yellowfin tuna is akin to running a four-minute mile. But when you catch that fish on a long-range boat and adhere to all of the International Game Fish Association angling rules, well that makes it more like a 3 ½-minute mile! Big tuna caught on long-range boats are often not eligible for IGFA records because the angler may have handed off the rod to get around the anchor orused the rail at some point during the fight. Mike Livingston, however, did everything just…
The Marine Life Protection Act Blue Ribbon Task Force (BRTF) and Master Plan Team (MPT) did not produce important information under California’s Public Records Act in their mission to create no-fishing zones, and it’s going to cost them. A March 10, 2011 California Superior Court ruling ordered that the BRTF and MPT payback 100-percent of the legal fees incurred by recreational angling groups in a 2010 lawsuit stemming from the MLPA’s lack of producing important information about their actions in adopting marine protected areas in the ocean waters off the California coast. The amount of retribution was not disclosed. “This…

Built to compliment vertical jigging, the Okuma Andros Travel rod features a powerful IM6 graphite blank that breaks down into two pieces with the ferrule connection in the handle. This allows the rod to use a more natural bend similar to what you’d find in a one-piece setup. The ALPS 316 stainless steel guide frames with Zirconium inserts work great with mono or braid. Other features include a machined aluminum reel seat with finger grooves for comfort, orange carbon-fiber pipe under the reel seat, and an orange anodized aluminum, etched butt cap. The Andros jigging rods compliment Okuma’s Andros 5II lever…
Making that perfect cast to a tailing marlin is crucial, and while smaller reels provide a distinct advantage, you still need the power to land the fish. Okuma’s new two-speed Andros reel packs plenty of power into a minimalist frame and body size. Andros construction pulls from the strength of Okuma’s Makaira and Cedros lever-drag series with six ball bearings, 17-4 grade stainless steel helical cut gears, wet Carbonite drag system with Cal’s drag grease and ratcheting drag lever to help you set the drag with exacting precision. The gear system delivers a ratio of 6.4:1 in high and 3.8:1…
Those with an educated thumb almost always prefer a bait-caster over a spinner when it comes to making a precise cast. Okuma Citrix bait-caster offers anglers a low-profile reel that feels comfortable in your hands when casting a jig or fighting a keeper. The reel features a rigid die-cast, anodized aluminum frame with lightweight graphite sideplates and a V-shaped spool. The reel pumps out 11-pounds of drag thanks to a multi-disc composite drag system. With a total of eight bearings, the reel’s free-spool and retrieve is super smooth and consistent. Take control of your cast with the external adjustable control system…

Thankfully, granddad’s cutoffs are a thing of the past. Fishworks has once again upped the ante by introducing Quatro Stretch technology to the world of high-tech fishing clothing. This four-way stretchable fabric is light, quick drying, and water repellent. Fishworks combined the Quatro Stretch fabric with its best-selling prints, to create the Quatro Boardshort line. Comprised of the super comfortable Quatro Stretch, the shorts feature double plier pockets, a cargo side…
Scientists working on the recovery of endangered coho salmon return to northern California appreciate success even if it comes in small doses. Field biologists from the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) recently reported the largest number of coho returning to spawn in Sonoma County tributaries of the Russian River in more than a decade. “Most of these fish were released as fingerlings into the river system, as part of a captive broodstock program at Don Clausen Warm Springs Hatchery on Lake Sonoma. The broodstock program began 10 years ago, when wild coho salmon were rapidly vanishing from the…
Boating at night just got a whole lot brighter. The latest thermal imaging technology from FLIR allows captains to see at night where they’re going no matter how dark it is. Founded in 1978, FLIR provides stabilized thermal imaging systems for aircraft, law enforcement, maritime and many other markets. It only takes five seconds using one of FLIR’s products to see the benefits of incorporating one of these units onto your boat. Using the thermal-imaging technology, FLIR’s products make it easy to spot floating debris, other boats, structure or even a man overboard in any condition. FLIR makes it possible to…
Going out on a boat without a pair of polarized glasses is like walking into a gunfight with no gun — you simply shouldn’t do it. Costa’s latest pair of polarized performance glasses, the Sunglasses Fantail, features a thick wrap-around frame with a no-slip Hydrolite lining along the entire interior to keep the sunglasses comfortably in place all day – even on a sweaty nose coated in sunblock. The bold nylon construction provides maximum durability and forget-they’re-on comfort fit, able to withstand harsh conditions and bouncing around on a boat all day. Available in tortoise or black frames colors, with…
Ready for a roadtrip? If you packed your bags, fishing rods and tackle box and headed across the country from Washington, D.C. to San Diego, you’d log nearly 2,700 miles. That’s the amount of fishing line that was recycled through the BoatUS Foundation’s Reel In and Recycle Program in 2010, which gives anglers an easy way to recycle fishing line at over a thousand locations across the country. “This effort happens as a result of many individuals and organizations,” said BoatUS Foundation Director of Environmental Programs Susan Shingledecker. “In the last two years we’ve built and distributed nearly 1,200 fishing…
At 357 Pounds, This Galapagos Bigeye Could be the New 50-pound Line Class World Record Bigeye Tuna While the Galapagos waters are more known for their resident population of striped marlin, you never know what you might find in this angling El Dorado. Capt. Braden Escobar and his crew on Big Fish had seen 10 days of slick-calm water, but the marlin bite had slowed down to a trickle (by Galapagos standards anyway). “The crew decided to shake it up a bit” On February 13, the crew decided to shake it up a bit and run 50 miles to Floreana Island.…
Billfish Foundation Tag Release Winners Each year since 1990 The Billfish Foundation (TBF) has awarded anglers, captains, and mates who helped the global billfish conservation effort by tagging fish and recording their catch data. The valuable data recovered from the TBF tagging program is critical to learning the migratory habits of billfish and growth information. TBF’s Overall Tagging Winners for all species (blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, white marlin, sailfish, and spearfish) included Gray Ingram, Overall Male Angler; Betsy Crudele, Overall Lady Angler; and Chris Sheeder, of Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, as the Overall Captain. Baby Sailfish – Small Frys This Atlantic Baby Sailfish Small Frys came into the lights while swordfishing at night. You’ll often find juvenile sails running with the Gulf Stream, especially around the Florida Straits, a known nursing ground. Sailfish Med It’s very difficult to tell the various billfish apart at this young age, but we’re pretty positive this is another sailfish, a bit older than the previous picture. However, that pointed dorsal fin makes us wonder if it’s not a marlin… Roosterfish Roosterfish

BD Outdoors was originally founded as Bloodydecks.com in 2003 by a couple of San Diego fishermen who were looking to share fishing information with other local anglers. The site was a simple internet forum with a no holds barred format that anglers quickly embraced. Over the first few years’ traffic grew exponentially as fishermen flocked to a site where they could speak their mind and learn more about their sport. The forums quickly filled up with a cast of characters and fishing reports from all over the west coast began to flood in. These reports and other fishing information attracted…
