One of the most rewarding fish to target along both the Southern California Coast and its offshore islands, the California Halibut presents an exciting pursuit for novice and experienced anglers alike. The California Halibut can grow to weigh upwards of 60 pounds and 5 feet in length. As the seasons change, the locations and depths we target halibut adjust as well. In the Summer months, we often fish for halibut in the shallow water areas of the bays and head to deeper coastal waters for the Fall and Winter months. In addition to being one of our favorite gamefish, Halibut…
At the end of this past summer, the BD Outdoors team headed down to Rancho Leonero for a week filled with big adventures and fun days of fishing. It was an amazing trip, from accommodations to fishing, our team had a blast fishing all angles of this plentiful fishery. Despite fishing just a few days after Hurricane Kay had rolled through and mixed up the water, we were able to figure out a pattern and ended up catching numerous species of fish from the beach, kayaks, paddle boards, and charter boats.
With the San Diego long range season in full swing, there’s no better time to brush up on one of the most popular and effective ways to connect your fluorocarbon leader to hollow core braid. While serving fluoro into hollow core is not exclusive to the long range or offshore scene, it is certainly where we see this application used most commonly. When you’re prepping to spend upwards of 10 days on a boat in search of trophy fish in Baja, it’s worth taking the extra time to make sure all of your gear and connections are 100% ready, even…

Bar none, one of the most effective ways to catch giant Pacific Bluefin Tuna both historically and still today has been with the use of a rigged dead flying fish. When fished from a kite, these baits appear to be either floating in place on the surface of the water, or slowly swimming along. Big Bluefin cannot resist the allure of a properly rigged flying fish, but on days when they are picky, how well you’ve rigged your flying fish can be the difference of getting bites or not. In this video, Ali Hussainy gives you the best tips for…

As San Diego based anglers, one of our favorite things to do is pack up some gear and head South into Baja. Being in such close proximity to some truly world-class fishing is something that we don’t take lightly, and each trip to Baja is something we are truly thankful for. One of the species of fish that we don’t have the opportunity to fish in our local waters, but absolutely love to target below the border, is the Leopard Grouper, commonly known as the Cabrilla. Fishing Cabrilla in skinny water is one of the most thrilling experiences and angler…
