It is very satisfying to see some justice handed out to the three individuals who became infamous for their acts of cruelty to fish and wildlife.  Most notably their self posted video of the dragging of a shark at high speeds behind a running boat.  We can only hope that justice will follow through and make them examples. The California Fish and Game Commission yesterday voted to close the 2018 northern California recreational fishery(Abalone Fishery) due to ongoing environmental conditions that have significantly impacted the abalone resource. The closure affects next year’s recreational abalone season, which was scheduled to open on April 1, 2018. The Commission’s 4-0 decision (Commissioner Jacque Hostler-Carmesin was absent) upholds the policies of the Abalone Recovery and Management Plan, which was adopted by the Commission in December 2005. Over the past several years, the Commission has taken several actions to reduce take and shorten the season to protect them from the unprecedented environmental conditions.…

California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is now accepting applications for the California Boater Card. The card verifies that its holder has successfully taken and passed an approved boater safety education course. Once issued, the California Boater Card remains valid for an operator’s lifetime. On Sept. 18, 2014, Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. signed into law Senate Bill 941, which prohibits the operation of motorized vessels in California without a valid boater card developed and issued by DBW. Costa Rica Sportfishing Community Rejects Marine Reserve Eight sport-fishing associations and two fishing clubs represented by FECOP, the sport-fishing advocacy group in Costa Rica, voted unanimously not to support the Alvaro Ulgalde Marine Reserve even though its promoters claim sport-fishing will be allowed in the proposed law sent to the Costa Rican Congress. Florida Keys Angling Associations Receive First Grants from IGFA Worldwide Anglers Relief Fund The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) today announced the first grants from its new Worldwide Anglers Relief Fund (WARF).
