A Letter From the Founders of Captains for Clean Water Recent events mark an important day for the history of the Everglades. The Florida House of Representatives followed the lead of the Senate, and passed Senate Bill 10. This bill provides $800 million in funding to create a dynamic reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee, in the Everglades Agricultural Area. The reservoir is needed to provide freshwater to Florida Bay, and to alleviate discharges to the Caloosahatchee and St Lucie Rivers. Captains for Clean Water was founded just over a year ago. The Marina del Rey Halibut Derby took place this past weekend on April 29th and 30th at Burton Chace Park in Marina Del Rey. A total of 84 anglers participated in the two day event to help raise funds for the Marina del Rey Anglers’ Youth Fishing Program and White Sea Bass Grow Out Program. These two great programs allow the club to take over 500 at risk and disabled children fishing and release 10,000 juvenile white seabass annually. The 2017 recreational Pacific halibut fishery will commence Monday, May 1 for the first of four open periods. This season’s dates are May 1-June 15, July 1-15, Aug. 1-15 and Sept. 1-Oct. 31, or until the quota is reached, whichever is earlier. The open and closed periods are intended to provide fishing opportunities from spring through fall. The 2017 Pacific halibut quota for the California subarea is 34,580 pounds – about 5,000 pounds more than the 2016 quota. Lobster Report Cards due April 30th Just a reminder that all California spiny lobster report cards must be returned to CDFW by April 30th, even if the report card was not used or no lobster were taken. The card returns allow the Department to determine the total number of sport fishermen targeting lobster and how many they caught. Data collected from the report cards documents changes in the fishery, whether it’s a gear change or an increasing or decreasing trend in catch.
