How much do you really know about your rods, how they’re built, and their components? Like most of us probably not so much, but as one of the crucial elements in fishing, there’s more there than we probably realize. The intricacies in a rod can make or break your fishing experience, literally. The good folks at American Tackle Co. have begun to put together a long overdue series of videos that dive into these details. Check them out they are well put together, highly informative, and will make sure your next purchasing decision is based on performance rather than making sure…

Thin, Light and Huge on Power. Available right now, 28 all-new St. Croix Rift Salt and Rift Jig models elevate nearshore fishing experiences. Whether popping or cranking for roaming pelagics or working schools vertically, presenting big hardware for powerful saltwater behemoths is hard work. Angling stamina can wear down to the point where presentations become sloppy and less effective, or – even worse – to the point where fishing days end prematurely. Encompassing 16 distinct boat models (Rift Salt) and 12 jigging models (Rift Jig), all-new St. Croix Rift Series rods are offered as a direct response to nearshore saltwater…

“Few brands walk the walk and talk the talk like Aftco, I’ve always been impressed with the quality of their products and equally taken aback with what their brand stands behind. Tenacity and character, grit and desire all have their role, but the true test is the legacy one man’s passion leaves for the generation to come. Few individuals…
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has announced the recreational Pacific halibut fishery will close Sunday, Aug. 7 at 11:59 p.m. Based on the latest catch projections, CDFW expects the 2022 California recreational quota of 38,740 net pounds will be exceeded unless the fishery is closed. CDFW field staff are located at public launch ramps and charter boat landings to monitor catches of Pacific halibut throughout the season, along with other marine sport fish species. Significant changes to California’s groundfish sport fishing regulations are expected starting next year, in response to recent scientific information suggesting some nearshore groundfish species are in decline. To reduce pressure on these stocks, fishing seasons will be shorter in nearshore waters, but new opportunities in deeper water are anticipated. The upcoming changes were developed by the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) over the past year and reflect outcomes of a public decision-making process where the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) worked with fishing industry representatives, non-governmental organizations, and state, federal and tribal governments to balance the need for fishing…

One of the great joys of boating is that the size of your on-water adventures does not depend directly on the size of your boat or engine. Even in a small boat, there are incredible opportunities to explore and enjoy the freedom that the water brings. This is among the reasons why Mercury Marine continues to refine and develop new engines and technologies that allow people to experience a better time boating, no matter the type of boat they own. The latest example is a new series of 25 and 30hp four-stroke outboard engines. Available from Mercury Authorized Dealers beginning in July,…
Our West Coast fishery is highly a bait fishery and a live lining one at that, and things just got a lot easier thanks to the folks at Daiwa. The release of their new spinning reel the FREE SWIMMER is a perfect complement to our fishery. Whether you’re live lining a sardine or anchovy this reel gives the capability of casting with a spinning reel and the ability to live line as you would with a traditional conventional reel, but much easier in actuality. “Our new Free Swimmer reel is a great equalizer. “It’s designed to be the ultimate saltwater…
There was a time when a West Coast angler wouldn’t even consider the possibility of using a spinning reel unless it was to chase around spotted bay bass off the local dock. Conventional reels provided an unmatched performance with castability and fish-stopping heavy drags in comparison to spinning reels. Today, the same can not be said and spinning reels are outperforming in a variety of scenarios. In other words, they’re here to stay and they’re better than ever. One of the brands leading the charge of the spinning reel revolutions is PENN and they just came out with their newest…

A look at the Coronado Islands presented by Rapala.
We strongly believe in the age-old saying “monkey see, monkey do”, sure we can read all the articles on slow pitch jigging until you’re blue in the face but what better way to get versed than a tutorial from the expert himself, Benny Ortiz. We jumped on a flight to Key West, FL to meet up with Benny for what we thought would be one of those epic fishing trips, catching gag grouper, mutton snapper, and whatever else the keys had to offer all while learning a new tactic to take back home to impress our own community with.
In recent years we’ve seen the level of capturing the act of fishing skyrocket. No longer are these clips of fishing adventures, we are being presented with beautiful artistry telling the stories of our culture. One of the brands pushing the envelope on this kind of storytelling is Costa. In their most current filmmaking endeavor, Costa Films explores the legacy of fourth-generation Florida Keys Fishing guides and Costa Pros, Brandon and Jared Cyr, who’ve spent their entire lives on the water. Born and raised Conchs, their family-first mentality and dedication to guiding forms a bond that transcends that between most…

As anglers, I tend to think we are somewhat selfish in our pursuit as well as probably pretty hypocritical. We have all this gear made of plastic and we pursue our game sometimes in complete ignorance of our footprint. In all honesty, I don’t always take the approach of the environment first and I’m not the most aware consumer in my use, but if there is something we can all do it is to start. The past is the past and we need to look to the future to mend, sustain and preserve for our fishing needs and those of…
