Our needs in Southern California are extensive when it comes to outerwear on the water. It can be cold to cool here, or blazing hot literally any month of the year. We may be fishing on a center console skiff inshore or offshore one day, and on a sportboat 100 miles out to sea the next. It can be windy and overcast in the morning, but hot and sunny in the afternoon. With all these variables it’s difficult to say that there is the perfect set of outerwear for us in our region.
Grundens’ is from the Pacific Northwest and is known for its heavy, commercial-grade bibs and jackets. In the last few years, they’ve really started to explore other fisheries and have done a great job expanding their product line to cater to them; luckily Southern California is one of those fisheries.

Recently, we were able to test their CHARTER GORE-TEX® BIB and CHARTER GORE-TEX® JACKET in scenarios that range from fishing the local Coronado Islands, to some pretty nautical Sportboat fishing for big bluefin. What we found, was that these were not your everyday outerwear items. These were developed with the active angler in mind, meaning they fit in a way that is non-restricting, and have reinforced knees and cuffs. The next thing we noticed and really enjoyed was how lightweight they felt which is perfect for our fishery, leaving the angler with the option to layer up.
Another key feature that can’t go unrecognized is GORE-TEX. This material allows for water to be repelled while still remaining breathable. The Gore-Tex materials, features, and treatments utilized by Grundens are backed by the GORE-TEX® GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY™ promise. Additionally, the chest pocket is another key feature that caught our eye. Side pockets always tend to get in the way and this chest pocket is ideal to keep those important items within quick reach.
These are some of our favorite components of the CHARTER GORE-TEX Bib and Jacket. We can’t recommend them enough, and think you’ll feel the same.
